About the Neighbourhood

Our home is located in Rato neighbourhood of Lisbon. Practically the centre of town it is a less touristy and more authentic and very beautiful residential area with fantastic transport, its own metro stop (taking you downtown in minutes easily), buses through the main square, supermarkets, stationer’s and all kinds of other shops, minutes walk from this B&B.  The most charming part of Rato is that it is a crossroads between a number main roads that lead to very different neighbourhoods – but it is also criss-crossed by dozens of small lanes and by-streets. If you take a walk along any of the main roads you can end up in any of the gardened squares of Principe Real, down in the shopping avenue Av. da Liberdade, or in the beautiful Jardim da Estrela. If you stick to the small streets, you’ll find a number of great spots, cool bars, quiet cafés. It is just one of those neighbourhoods that’s really easy.

We recommend the following insider places near the home:

  • Real Fábrica dishes out some typical Portuguese food. 14 mins MAP
  • One place to drink: Procópio. This is one of those hidden off-the-beaten-track bards you just have to see. 14 mins MAP
  • Quatro ao Rrato. Sit down and ask for a coffee and one of the home-made pastries. 11 mins MAP
  • Casa de Chá, or tea house, more commonly known by its old name: Vicentinas. Bring friends along for good company and conversation and enjoy the hot, steaming tea and scones that have follow a recipe that’s nearly a hundred years old. 10 mins MAP
  • Jardim de Estrela - one of Lisbons most beautiful parks and gardens with cafes and kiosks and the incredible Estrela Basilica at the far end. 8 mins MAP
  • Casa Fernando Pessoa - the home of Portugals most famous poet immortalized on every street corner. 5 mins MAP
  • Principe Real - the trendy boutique village of local designer stores, the beautiful Jardim do Principe Real, the Museum of Natural History and the must-see Embaixada medieval shopping mall. 19 mins MAP
