Welcome to Francisco's incredible family home - your Bed & Breakfast Guesthouse in Lisboa. If you are looking for a place where you will feel at home, this is the place for you. With a stunning view over both Lisbon and the Tejo river,  B&B Francisco is located in Estrela, two minutes away from Basílica da Estrela and the world famous 28 elétrico. This very central location makes it perfect for tourism: for those who like to walk, there are multiple points of interest around; for those who don't, taxis, buses and subway, besides the eléctrico, can be found nearby. Dozens of restaurants for every taste, including fado houses, also abound nearby.

This home was built by Francisco's grandfather when he was just 32 years old to house his family of eight. A regular building in an anonymous street, nothing gives away the fact that on top there is a 9-bedroom, 640sqm, three-storey house with one of the most stunning views over Lisboa you will find anywhere. Francisco's family have lived here for almost 50 years. Now it is open to anyone who wishes to experience Lisboa from a beautiful family-orientated home and environment.

About the rooms

Our Guesthouse has one suite, five rooms with in-room bathrooms and two more rooms with their respective private bathrooms across the corridor. All rooms have air conditioning.

Every room is named after the original designations we had for each one (playroom, library, dressing room etc). All the rooms are different and naturally they will appeal differently to different persons. Because of this, Petite B&Bs will be glad to help you choose the right room for you if you are having doubts.

The room prices include breakfast, free wi-fi and daily housekeeping.

VAT included. Municipal Tourist tax not included, payable at check-in (1.00 € / person per night)

If you find you need anything extra, or have some special requests, please do tell. Our guesthouse aims to be more of a home than a hotel and having only 9 rooms allows Francisco and his team the ability to give individual attention.

The rooftop terrace is an incredible feature of this home. Available for guests to enjoy anytime with an 'honesty bar' couches, sunchairs and tables and all the main monuments and buildings of Lisboa can actually be seen from up there such as:

  1.   Castelo de S. Jorge
  2. Miradouro and Igreja da Graça
  3. Jardim do Principe Real
  4. Assembleia da República
  5. Igreja de Santa Catarina
  6. Basilica da Estrela
  7. Castelo de Palmela
  8. Serra da Arrábida
  9. Cristo-Rei
  10. Cacilhas
  11. Sé de Lisboa

A message from Francisco about the history of the house:

"In 1957 my grandfather, Eduardo Cansado Carvalho, was looking to build a house for his growing family. He already had 4 children but was very likely to have a few more and therefore needed more space. At 34 years-old and doing very well for himself, he could afford to think about something special but, being who he was, acquiring something off the market just wouldn’t do. Always on the lookout for the ultimate bargain, my grandmother pointed out this piece of land in the aristocratic Lapa district, next to her aunt’s house; highly unimpressive at first view, just some land with a shed on it, for my grandfather’s sharp eye it was perfect.

Construction of the building began in 1958 and, under my grandfather’s technical supervision, by mid 59 it was done. On top, a 640sqm triplex apartment with river views from every single window and a stunning terrace as the perfect family home. The rest is of history.

My 2 youngest uncles were born here, my eldest aunt got married here as well. My baptism party was here on the 3rd of November 1980, and so were many of my cousins and brothers. We could not possibly count how many parties were thrown here but my other aunt still regrets that the late Sir Roger Moore ended up not showing up to one in the early 80’s.

I will be glad to tell you some other stories over breakfast in the morning, or perhaps over a glass of wine on the terrace. There is certainly no better way to finish a long day wondering around our beautiful city"

Comment: In my second stay in this B&B, I was pleased and glad I came back. Lisbon is charming, it does not feel touristy the way other larger European capitols do. The B&B captures the best parts of Lisbon living. It is located away from busier sections such as Barria Alto or La Alfama, but public transport is easy to use (I like the walks - but it is a hilly city). The B&B is immediately next to a beautiful cathedral, a charming park, and a neat neighborhood with a new market. Francisco, the owner is great for recommendations. I like to pick restaurants on my own (I use Chowhound, TA, and NY Times "36 hours series") - so I will usually have an itinerary. He knows me well enough to say "you'll like that" or "that is more expensive than it is worth", and is always right on. He knows about out of the way restaurants and bars that TA never finds. I stayed (by accident) during the festival of St. Anthony my first visit. Francisco was able to draw out on a map where all the best music, food, and parties would be. The rooms are small, but you feel as though you are staying in a guest house with beautiful common areas (especially the roof deck with one of the best views of the city). I've found it quiet both times I've stayed, and have enjoyed talking with other guests. This is not the inn to stay at if you want super luxury, but it is the one if you want to drink in the best Lisbon has too offer.

Comment: We stayed 8 nights here after having been recommended by a friend a couple of years before. We were in the Dressing Room - large double bed, big wardrobe, small ensuite with shower and a lovely little internal balcony which was good to have a bit more "living room" type place. As others have said, the view from the terrace on the roof is amazing and wish we had spent more time up there! There's an honesty bar to help you while away the time with a drink up there. Francisco the host is charming and goes above and beyond to warmly welcome you and shower you with recommendations - sights, transport, day trips and eateries. The food court at the Mercado at Campo de Ourique (10mins walk) was fabulous for meals (from 7-10 euros) and Tasca da Esquina (5 mins walk) was lovely for a last night treat (c. 30 euros each). Breakfast is great and wide variety - cereals, fresh fruit salad, breads/croissants, cheese, cold meats, cake / biscuits, yoghurts and eggs on demand. coffee, teas, fresh orange juice. Location was great - #28 and #25 trams stop at the Basilica 1 min away, yellow Metro line is 10mins walk away at Rato. (Just be aware trams don't run late into the evenings, e.g. coming home after dinner, and we often found there was an enormous queue at the first stop at Martim Moniz heading home - so metro may be better bet). Yes it's a bit outside the very centre and tourist hub but we enjoyed that - found it very quiet - and it's not far to walk in / down to wherever you're going - and there's always the option of tram or metro back uphill afterwards!

Comment: We stayed in the dressing room for 2 nights and 2 busy days. It's a great room with a private balcony which is very nice, however the view from the rooftop terrace is even better so don't worry if you can't get that particular room . The welcome was friendly, warm and helpful. Its a great location central to anything you need, and if you follow their advice on where to go, what to see and how to get there you can't go wrong. The communication with Francisco was great and I would give him 10 stars if I could.

Comment: The playroom is clean with great view. The environment nearby is fantastic. I stay here for a short summer study. The host kindly prepares breakfast for me even if I need to leave the house around 8am. The view at the terrace is breathtaking.

Comment: I have just come back from Lisbon and I stayed at thehouse last weekend for 2 nights with my Mum as a birthday treat, a perfect city break! Thehouse is a lovely place to stay, we both thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will be sure to visit again. The location is easy access to trams, taxis and tuk tuk rides, with a few shops and cafes just round the corner. The beautiful church is right next door with a stunning view of it from the roof terrace. The roof terrace alone is worth the visit! The views are amazing and you can see the whole of the city! Breakfast is very nice, we were offered egg and bacon as well as continental. The rooms/bathrooms are very clean and modern with aircon included and hairdryers. Staff were always pleasant and helpful! Lisbon has so much to offer and would recommend friends to visit the city and thehouse boutique B&B!

Comment: We were in the Library, a small room, but fine for two. The breakfast was ample, the staff were helpful, and the host was a mine of useful information. The room terrace is stunning, and a great place to relax after a full day of signt seeing. The area is wonderful to explore, and it is an easy walkn nor tram ride down to the centre. We even found excellent flat whites - although the standard Portugese 'cafe' is hard to beat.

Comment: A 5 minute walk from the Basilica da Estrella and you will find "the house" halfway up the Travessa do Pinheiro. Not the most imposing of entrances, blink and you will miss it. Once inside you get into a small lift which will take two people and their luggage at most. Hhhmmm I was getting worried. When the doors opened the owner was there to greet us in a very contemporary open plan room. We had a tour of the premises and after some guidance on what, how and where to see we were shown to our room aptly called the Nanny's room. The suite consisted of a master bedroom, bathroom and a small spare bedroom with a pull out bed. The undoubted highlight of the hotel is the view from the roof which was breathtaking, as good if not better than any famous city viewing spots. Actually this was better as you could sit on comfy couches and loungers with a shade and a glass of wine drinking in the view. When the hotel is full the breakfast area can get a little cramped. The breakfast itself was fine, plenty of coffee, OJ, fruit, yogurts and eggs served how you would like. We stayed for three nights and enjoyed it.

About the Neighbourhood

B&B Francisco is located in Estrela, a very upscale historic and prestigious part of Lisbon, known as the 'rich' area where many historic palaces and buildings adorn the cobblestone streets. Two minutes away from the Basilica da Estrela the incredible iconic church where multiple trams take you downtown easily in 15mins. The Jardim de Estrela is a glorious manicured green space, a park with cafe kiosks to enjoy refreshing drinks or coffee, a pond, and places to sit and enjoy. Withn 10 mins you can reach many other attractions in Lisbon too such as the Museu Nacional de Art Antiga (National Museum of Antique Art) with its lovely Jazz cafe next door overlooking the river and the Museu de Marionnet (Museum of Puppetry). Multiple services, including numerous restaurants for every taste, can be found on the streets nearby the B&B for lunch or evening meals. Or again, trams at the door can take you to town easily in 10-15mins. This is a perfect place to stay if you want to experience authentic residential tranquil neighbourhood with its own bustling village life and amazing historic architecture, yet still be close to the action of the commercial centre.
