Description

About your hosts:

Sylvie and Francois are in their early sixties and were both born in Paris. They love this city and know it perfectly well; its entertainments, its theaters, its museums, its walks etc, they will be happy to help you in the organization of your visits or evenings.

During her childhood, Sylvie lived in Brazil and Uruguay. François studied in France, in England and in the United States (University of Washington, Seattle). They have traveled a lot together, Mexico, Peru, Cuba, Morocco, Tunisia and in all Asia which they know perfectly: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Vietnam, Korea, China, Tibet and of course they know France and part of Europe well.

Sylvie is a photographer specialized in Asia and François is an Asian traditional music record producer. They met on the radio where she was the assistant to the most famous producer broadcasting for teenagers in the sixties, and he was a journalist in the same radio station. They have lived together since May 1968!  Then Sylvie was a press agent working for the show business, the record industry and movie, then in the publishing field. She is also the writer of many books on cooking recipes after attending cooking lessons in different countries.

François has been a producer and host for radio and television shows. He has written many books on the rock counter-culture. He has also been (in the seventies) the director for some successful movies.

They both love meeting new people, and quite naturally at the beginning of 2009, after their two children had left the nest, they decided to open a bed and breakfast in their home. The accommodation is very convenient and they receive visitors for all over the world with much pleasure.

They both speak English well. Sylvie understands Spanish. Francois knows a little Russian (his grand-father was from Ukraine).

Their passions include music, movies from all the continents, reading, photographs, cooking and long-distance travels. They have lots of collections: books, graphic novels, thousands of old vinyl records which they will make you listen to if you are interested.

About the apartment:

As far as architecture is concerned, this area is typical with Haussmannian buildings from the middle of the XIX century, and Art Déco style from 1920-1930. The facade of the building where you will stay will be registered soon with the Historical Monuments in Paris, the artist's studio then being considered as parts of the Parisian patrimony.

The building was built with a metallic structure by Gustave Eiffel, civil engineer, in 1889, at the same time as his Eiffel Tower and with the same materials.

Made of different artists workshops, lofts on two or three levels, it is included in guided tours of Paris, and the tourists are always surprised by this strange construction. From the time they were built, they have been occupied by numerous famous or not artists, among them the painter and actor Joe Hamann, a friend of Buffalo Bill, as well as the designer Joseph-Porphyre Pinchon who created the famous Bécassine, the little maid from French Brittany.

Sylvie and François have lived at this amazing address for more than 30 years. All along the time, they bought several workshops. Today, they receive you in a magnificent loft of 200 m2 on two levels.

Downstairs, on the second floor of the building, without elevator, you will find the living-room with a ceiling up to 6 meters high, the kitchen and your hosts' private rooms.

The floor above, where the guest rooms are located, can be reached by an internal staircase made by the famous designer Talon in the seventies, but also by the staircase of the building so guests can come and go without having to pass through the home first if they do not wish to all the time.

The decoration of this workshop was made at the end of the sixties-beginning of the seventies with the purple-orange-brown colors from the origin and it is full of souvenirs brought from travels in Asia, with Buddha statues and many masks from different countries.

The living-room, central part of the loft, is a large room whose ceiling is 6 meters up. Lit by a window 5 meters high, it reflects your hosts' passion for traveling. A tall Ramayana wooden statue from Bali stands close to a palm tree of 4 meters high which grows well close to the window. Up to ten people can take place on the two comfortable and large sofas. The wall is decorated with a large painting from Bali representing a moon calendar looking like a cartoon. The Louis-Philippe chest of drawers is covered with Asian sculptures and Buddhas from different countries. A large mirror made of painted glass from Marrakech is hanged above.

One of the walls is covered with a large library made of white plastic from the sixties. The shelves are full of thousands of old vinyl LP records collected by François at the time he was working for the radio. A lithography of Mick Jagger, signed by Andy Warhol is above. François is very proud of his collection of records, he knows that many of his visitors are impressed by it and it will be a pleasure for him to show it to you and explain the life of the singers pop and rock stars from the fifties up to now who he met: Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Stones, Bob Dylan, etc.

Special note: This is an accommodation of rare quality with most exceptional hosts. Should the walls talk, they would have much to tell you ...Your hosts have lots of culture and memories of the past. You will love this accommodation for its beauty, its originality, as well as for the pleasure of sharing time with your hosts.

About your private entry suite:

Comment: Francois from the moment I met you I thought you were a crazy Frenchman...and I was right. But your humor and hospitality was good fun and something I would have missed out on in an ordinary hotel. Your directions and guidance around Paris was most helpful as I am sure we would have gotten very lost. Thank you again. merci beaucoup.

Comment: It was a memorable first trip to Paris. We had a beautiful room, a great location and it culminated in a romantic marriage proposal. But equally memorable was the warm hospitality of our B&B hosts, Francois and Sylvie.

Comment: Being welcomed to a country where they do not speak your language first is a great feeling. Francois and Sylvie genuinely made you feel like old friends that they were so pleased to see

About the Neighbourhood

17ème - Batignolles

Sylvie and François have chosen to live in the 17th district located between Monceau park and the Ternes area, mainly because it is one of the safest areas in Paris, while also being quite reserved, classic and more on the upper-scale side. Then, if you like shopping, the building is just in front of a large discount fashion department store and very close to the Espace Champerret which offers every week exhibitions such as: wine exhibition, gastronomy, antique and antics, etc. Staying here you will be close to Porte Maillot, the Arc of Triumph, the Defense area, the Palais de Congres de Paris )making this ideal for business travellers). From here you will join the Champs-Elysées in less than 20 minutes' walk and will easily stroll along the most beautiful avenue in the world or go to the Trocadero to admire the Seine River and the Eiffel Tower.

It is worthy of noting for the tourists of Jewish origin who traditionally have kosher food that this part of the Parisian XVIIth arrondissement comprises at least a dozen of nice and good places to eat that offer a wide choice: not only delicatessens and snacks with terraces, but also Italian pizzas, Tunisian couscous, Japan sushi, Chinese caterer that are all kosher. In other respects, a synagogue, two catholic churches, a Russian orthodox church, an Armenian church and a protestant temple are nearby our B&B from which all these places of worship can easily be reached by walk.
